There are a few 88-key controllers out there (see link below), but, unfortunately, they are rarely available on display to check out and what you consider a realistic feel may differ dramatically from what other people think. But since you're only looking at the 8 knobs on the KK I'm thinking you may just want to play notes mainly?Ĭlick to expand.I think the OP is looking for weighted keys for a piano-like experience (OP - correct me if I'm wrong). but you never know when someone asks for a "controller" if they just simply mean "a keyboard that has none of its own sounds" or something they really want to use the controller elements (Knobs/Sliders/Buttons) to do things beyond just playing notes. That said, the Previa I linked to isn't really a "controller" either in terms of having many knobs and sliders etc. Not that you have to do this - you just asked for stuff to consider

But for that amount of money, it would not be my first choice - unless I had to have an 88 and had to have the NI sounds.įor my money you'd be better of with a controller and a good standalone piano library if not going the digital piano route. Nothing wrong with the NI KK88 of course - I'd prefer other things but if someone gave me one I'd absolutely keep it and use it. I think once you determine which of those kinds of things are important to you it'll help you zero in on a decision. KK is great if you're big into sound sculpting.īut the Arturia is better if you're doing more automation and mixing, and stuff like that in addition to the sound sculpting.Īnd for that reason you might want to consider just a controller if you don't just want to "turn it on and play".īut the Privias (or other similar things) are nice because you just turn it on and play - no need to mess with the computer and starting logic and so on.

It's also useful for "cheats" too, but I need to look the other way if someone's doing thatīut if it were me, and I wanted a controller, I'd only go NI if I wanted to also get the NI library with it.īut the Arturia controllers have more controller elements so they're a lot more useful for what I typically do. FWIW, I thought the lights on the KK would be goofy - and they are for the most part - but when you do stuff like percussion, the lights are color coded to the type of sound they are - so the cymbals are the same color, the toms are the same color, and so on, so that's actually kind of useful.
